Most luxury candles are poured fast and shipped faster. They look beautiful on the shelf. Then they tunnel by the third burn. The scent fades by week two.
Choose a safe spot. Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, curtains, pets, and anything flammable. Keep at least 12 inches (about 30 cm) of clear space around it.
Trim the wick. Before lighting, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). This helps the candle burn evenly and reduces smoking and soot.
Remove packaging & debris. Make sure there’s no label, plastic, matches, or wick trimmings in the wax pool.
Light it carefully. Light the wick with a match or lighter. If using a match, let the sulfur burn off for a second before bringing it to the wick.
Let it form a full melt pool the first time. For the first burn, keep the candle lit long enough that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container — this prevents tunneling and ensures even burns in future uses. (How long depends on candle size; typically 1–4 hours.)
Keep burns moderate. Don’t burn a candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time to avoid overheating the container and to keep the fragrance balanced.
Monitor while lit. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep an eye on it and extinguish if the flame gets too high or flickers constantly.
Extinguish safely. Use a candle snuffer or gently blow it out. Avoid splashing hot wax. After extinguishing, make sure the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving it.
Trim between burns. After the wax has cooled and the wick is solid, trim it again to ~1/4 inch before relighting to keep smoke and soot low.
Store properly. Keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve scent and color.
